A historic location.

Pleasant Street holds a special place in Hyannis’ unique history. It is closely intertwined with New England’s rich seafaring tradition and Cape Cod’s prominent role in the nation’s commerce, fishing, whaling, and ship-building industries throughout the late 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

More than 150 sea captains called the village of Hyannis home. In fact, historical record refers to Pleasant Street as Sea Captains Row because of the number of master mariners who resided along this corridor connecting downtown and the inner harbor.

The following represents a brief history of the Sea Captains Row location on Pleasant Street.

1666

Nicholas Davis, the first settled businessman in Hyannis, builds a warehouse for oysters on Lewis Bay at the end of Pleasant Street.

1690

Edward Coleman, Jr., builds the first permanent residence in Hyannis at the head of Lewis Bay. The house was later moved to the corner of Pleasant and South Streets.

Early 1800s

Captain Alexander Baxter, known as the “Father of Hyannis,” builds the Cash Block.

The Cape Cod Railroad Company reaches Hyannis.

U S Grant

1874

President Ulysses S. Grant speaks to crowds on the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets as part of the inauguration of the railroad extension to Provincetown.
